Our history as a nonprofit is short. In 1998, the nonprofit agency,
First Mayor's House of Salinas City was formed. Our mission was
smple; to develop a living history museum with programs that support
the teaching of history and social studioes in MOnterey county Schools
and extend the educaitonal programs at the National Steinbeck Center.
At
the time the nonplr0ofit was formed, the House and cottage were located
at a location with little potential for achieving our purpose.
Subsequently, the City of Salinas Redevelopment Agency offered a new
location a nominal rent that was adjacent to other historic and
community resources. With funds raised from donations, family bequests,
and grants, the House and cottage were moved to the new locaion and
restoration of the House was begun. Over $800,000 was raised. With
these funds the House was restored to 90% completion, the orginal
artifacts returned, and the grounds were landscaped and an outdoor
classroom was constructed. In addition, plans were prepared to
renovate the cottage as an education and community center.
